Community share their views in survey helping to shape future of the area

More than 400 people have shared their views in a community survey held in the Niddrie and Craigmillar area of Edinburgh.

The community needs assessment, which ran for four weeks in the summer of 2024, aims to help shape the future of the area.

Residents of the communities as well as those who work or go to school there were given the opportunity to identify priorities to bring about positive change and talk about the existing challenges.

The aim was to highlight wider concerns and opportunities by listening to the voices of those at the heart of the community.

A total of 405 people responded and three top priorities were identified; anti-social behaviour; crime; and making the area feel safer.

Positive aspects of Niddrie and Craigmillar were also noted such as the proximity to local amenities and town centre, the people and local services.

The survey and the results were coordinated by the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit and Places for People Scotland, working alongside other partners.

The results from this survey will be used to guide local services as part of a community-led partnership approach to improve overall community wellbeing, focusing on the areas identified within this needs assessment.

Inspector Scott Kennedy, project manager with the SVRU, said: “We would like to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey and those who spoke to us during our days of action delivering the survey in the area.

“The results show how important it is for those who live and work in Niddrie and Craigmillar to have a voice in working together with service providers to address any issues and move forward to make a lasting change.

“The SVRU is committed to building on the progress already made, alongside Places for People Scotland, and both organisations would welcome any support from the wider community.”

The Niddrie and Craigmillar survey summary results are available to download in the research hub and the full report is available to read here.
